“Form is temporary, but class is permanent.” Cristiano Ronaldo proved this famous saying right on Tuesday night. All eyes were on him as Portugal stepped onto the field to face Uzbekistan. People were talking about his poor opening match and his ten-game goal drought for Portugal in major tournaments. But Ronaldo simply brushed those talks aside with a stunning performance.

He looked like a completely different player in the first half. Right from the whistle, he was full of energy. Fans finally saw him sprinting hard across the pitch again.

A Historic Comeback

Early in the game, Ronaldo missed a cross from Joao Cancelo. He showed that familiar flash of frustration. But that anger fueled him. Just moments later, in the 6th minute, Cancelo sent another beautiful cross his way. This time, Ronaldo didn’t miss. He hit a perfect volley straight into the net to score his first goal of the tournament.

With this magic moment, he became the first footballer in history to score in six different World Cups!

In the 17th minute, Portugal made it 2-0. Defender Nuno Mendes scored a brilliant free-kick from just outside the box. Ronaldo stood right beside him before the kick. The Uzbek players fully expected Ronaldo to take the shot, but he surprised everyone by letting Mendes take it, and the defender didn’t miss.

Extending the Lead

Uzbekistan tried to fight back and even scored in the 30th minute. However, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ruled it out. They found a foul in the build-up, and the goal was disallowed.

Then came the 39th minute. Midfielder Bruno Fernandes had been facing harsh criticism from fans for not passing the ball to Ronaldo in the last game. This time, he sent a perfectly timed pass into Ronaldo’s path. Ronaldo calmly slotted it home, just like in his prime days.

He almost scored a hat-trick right before halftime. His shot was rolling in, but the Uzbek defense cleared it right off the goal line. Still, Portugal went into the break with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

The Second Half

Portugal came out in the second half wanting more. They quickly made it 4-0 when Uzbekistan’s Abdukodir Khusanov accidentally scored an own goal. Ronaldo came close to getting his hat-trick twice but narrowly missed.

Finally, Portugal added a fifth goal in the 87th minute to finish the game. After a disappointing draw in their last match, Portugal bounced back to secure a massive 5-0 victory, driven by Ronaldo’s brilliance.

Shattering Messi’s Records

Ronaldo’s incredible night rewrote the history books:

  • Six World Cups: He is now the only player to score in six separate World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026). Lionel Messi has also played in six World Cups, but he failed to score in the 2010 edition under coach Diego Maradona.
  • Oldest to Score a Brace: At 41 years and 138 days, Ronaldo became the oldest player to score more than one goal in a World Cup match. He broke Lionel Messi’s previous record for this milestone.
  • Second Oldest Scorer Overall: He is now the second-oldest player to ever score a goal in a World Cup. Only Cameroon’s Roger Milla was older, scoring at 42 years and 39 days back in 1994.
