The wait is finally over! The biggest football festival on earth starts tonight, June 11, 2026. This is the 23rd edition of the FIFA Men’s World Cup, and it is going to be historic. For the first time ever, three countries are hosting the tournament together: the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

This mega event will run for 39 days, with the grand final taking place on July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey. It is also the biggest World Cup in history because a record-breaking 48 teams are playing this time, up from the usual 32. This means fans get to enjoy a massive feast of 104 matches in total.

The expanded format brings some highly interesting changes. For instance, the final two teams will now have to play eight matches instead of seven to lift the trophy. A brand-new “Round of 32” knockout stage has also been added. The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups, and amazingly, even the eight best third-place teams will qualify for the knockouts.

History is being made in other ways too. Mexico is becoming the first country to host the men’s World Cup three times, having previously hosted in 1970 and 1986. On the other hand, this is Canada’s very first time hosting the men’s tournament. Because of the three hosts, fans will actually experience three different opening ceremonies tonight.

Interestingly, no brand-new stadiums were built for this tournament, making it highly sustainable. Instead, all games in the US will happen in massive, pre-existing NFL stadiums. Since the matches are spread across three huge nations, teams and fans will travel through different time zones and climates. It is going to be a true cross-continental adventure.
